Have you ever been so mesmerized by a song that you played it all day long in an endless loop?
I have, many times, and yesterday was such a day, that I spent walking around Seattle in a bubble created by Sia’s new album 1000 forms of fear.
I first heard of Sia when, on her last album, she recorded a cover of Madonna’s Oh father, one of my favorite songs. She made a beautiful, sad rendition of it, and I bought the album.
Then, last year in Buenos Aires, my friend and radio DJ Andrés recommended me Sia’s theme song for The Hunger Games Soundtrack, Elastic heart, which was on heavy rotation on my playlist ever since on this trip.
So I could not wait for the release of the new album, and I got it finally two days ago in a Seattle record store… I bought it in excitement and forgot that I could not rip it, as my laptop has no CD player… so, well, I have the CD, so I felt I could legitimately, if not legally, steal it on a bit torrent… (Proof of purchase can be provided upon request).
Anyway, I was already thrilled by the first single Chandelier, with its beautiful, weird video.
It seems Sia is a bit shy, she once showed up in a TV show with a paper bag over her head, she does not do live shows… I hope she can keep that up comfortably, as her album went straight to #1 on the Billboard Hot200. So far the best Album of 2014!
The record is great, fantastic melancholic pop songs. The song that totally captured me yesterday, and probably for the weeks to come, is Big girls cry. It’s such a beautiful song, the melody lifts me up and I feel like floating through the streets, while the lyrics are so depressingly sad and lonely.
I just spent the afternoon in Volunteer’s Park, a beautiful patch of green on top of Capitol Hill, with an old water tower and a reservoir, plenty of old trees, and a great view over Puget Sound, the Space Needle, Lake Washington and Mount Rainier…
With a book, Sia, and a salad, that more can you want…?
