On the Ipanema market

Wanted to go downtown again, but ran into the market on Praça General Osório, a semi-green spot in the middle of town, that also holds a sort of Hippie craft market on Sundays, and is the major bus stop.

Tons of fresh fruit, too bad I had already had breakfast, I could have had fresh pineapple and tons of other fruit I don’t even know the name of.

The (culinary) discovery of the day however was some kind of sugar cane that got pressed out by a guy on a noisy machine.

I had noticed the stand for the number of people around it, they were selling some fried pastry stuff, filled with various meats or quejo. And most of them had that green, slightly foamy drink in hand.

Then I watched how he stuffed some canes into the machine, over and over till they were wrung out and basically shredded, and poured the juice into cups.

I had to have a taste. It was good, sweet but not overly sweet as I had feared… surprisingly fresh.

With a bit of ice and maybe some alcohol… what a drink!

I have to ask my hosts what exactly that was called…

UPDATE: It’s called Garapa. Or Caldo de Cana…

  1. The sugar cane is fantastic! But the Hippie Fair on sunday is at another park, the Praça General Osório.
