The temple of A-Ma

On the southern tip of the peninsula, built onto and into a rock formation, you’ll find the Temple of A-Ma, which supposedly gave Macau its name (as the Portuguese tried to enunciate the sound of the name of the place).

It is one of the oldest Taoist temples in Macau, built in 1488, and it is dedicated to Matsu, also known as Tin Hau, the goddess of seafarers and fishermen.

It is swarming with Chinese tourists from the mainland as well as foreign tourists (the most Westerners that I have seen so far in one spot in Macau).

While it is busy, it has a solemn atmosphere. Maybe it is all the incense burning all over the place that contribute to it and put you in that special mood.

I took a few pictures, always a bit hesitant as I do not want to intrude on some procedure or holy ritual.
