I finally made it down to Queen Victoria Market. It’s the central market of Melbourne, just outside the CBD.
First, I wasn’t impressed that much. I wandered through halls with lots of clothing, and the usual stuff aimed at tourists, Australia T-shirts, bags, scarfs, etc… and I found two rows of vegetables and fruit… but nothing spectacular. Except for the stand with the beautiful leather bags. But hey, I cannot buy a third bag on this trip!
So, where was the fish, the meat, the specialties…? I wandered on and realized I had only been in one part of a big complex maze of different halls and stands and markets. I found the meat, the fish – I like to wander through those even though as a vegetarian for 25 years I haven’t eaten any of that in ages, and don’t even remember the taste.
But I like watching it. I have a weird fascination for the lobsters and crabs, always looking if I see those poor fellas still move…
I’d never eat one, though.
The specialties were in a nice little old hall, with individual stands, offering the usual mix of bakeries, italian pasta stands, wine, salami… The doughnuts must be something, considering the long queue… I refrained from waiting 30 minutes to test them, though.
There’s lots of organic food, GMO free, the works… Prices go up, too. From 7$ a kilo of cherries to a mere 24.95$. Whoops.
Ok, in fairness, it can’t compete with the market of Sao Paulo, or even the big exotic feeling of the market in Valparaiso or Santiago.
But it’s a nice market, and a great way to spend a saturday morning. It also has a night market that I will check out in the end of January.
