When the results were out and the cars started to honk, I went for a quick visit of downtown, to the San Francisco Plaza Hotel, where the future president was addressing her voters.
The street vendors had foreseen the outcome and were selling Michelle’s portrait en masse. But also a fair share of Chilean flags, what would have served both possible outcomes.
The crowd was ecstatic. It is the highest victory in Chilean history, and a crushing defeat for poor Evelyn, who conceded very fast after the first precincts had started to report the figures.
I came just in time to hear the end of her speech, then the crowd sang what I suppose was the campaign song, Chile por todos, and then the party started.
However, I was meeting a friend for a wine in a park, so I did not stay long.
The funny thing was that the sale of alcohol was forbidden on that day – the Chilean voter is supposed to stay sober! So no alcohol in restaurants, or shops. You could only get some after Midnight again.
