Jay Brannan

I first saw Jay Brannan in one of my favorite movies ever: Shortbus. A movie, foremost about sex, but, if you look deeper, about humanity.

Since then he has made a remarkable career, with other movies, but foremost with his singing! I have missed his shows in Europe, often just by a day, as I was traveling, so I was thrilled to see he payed Seattle when I was there.

He has this unique way of singing about life. His life, love, people, little stories that happen, in such an open an human manner, sitting up there only with his guitar… and he captured me fast, listening to his songs and all the little stories in between.

He has just released a new album called Always, then & now, download-only, all by himself and is touring the US, Canada, and Europe in the autumn, again all self organized.

The show was at the Crocodile, a nice concert venue in Belltown, downtown Seattle, with great sound, a bar and small restaurant. It was a hot day, and we were all longing for a fan and a cool beer.

I like to discover new things, so Iw as happy that there was another singer before Jay, Terra Naomi, totally unknown to me. A girl with a guitar and a powerful voice.

She sang only a couple of her songs, some touching ballads, and some really fun, saucy songs about dating and former relationships. She definitely has a comedian’s talent, too.

She ended her show with a beautiful, slow version of Michael Jackson’s Billy Jean. Amazing voice.
