Despite the heat and the incredible humidity, I went on a little sightseeing trip, up the river to Wat Pho, a buddhist temple next to the royal palace, famous for its huge reclining Buddha.
Once I got through to the massive reclining Buddha along with dozens of other tourists, the groups dispersed in the wide area and I could enjoy a few moments of relative quiet and solitude, among the many, many Buddha statues, over 400.
I counted.
It’s beautiful, I got a bit lost in all the different complexes and little temples, small parks and walkways with Buddhas and other figures.
The granite figurines standing around are actually Chinese. They came along with Chinese junks at the time, being used as ballast. They ended up here when the junks sailed back to China with more valuable merchandise.
I wanted to continue to the Great Palace and the other, even more famous temple on the adjacent side of the river, the famous spire of Wat Arun.
Alas, honestly, with temperatures reaching 34 degrees and a humidity that defies all I have ever experienced, I only managed to sit down in a street food tent for some Pad Thai and then headed back, to relax and unwind at the pool.
I was soaking in sweat, to a point where I would have needed a towel. Or two. I can’t handle that kind of heat, and why push it? I’ll do it again in the next couple of days, maybe for sunset.
