Cooking lessons

More food. I got a private cooking class from Clinty, we did one of my favorites, raw Vietnamese Spring rolls.

We went to an Asian market on K-road, and got provisions. I love those supermarkets. We had a couple of smaller ones in Brussels, but in Auckland with its huge Asian population, this is wonderland!

I was close to buy a pack of deep frozen dumplings and dim sum, tons of vegetarian choices… They only carry the meat ones in Brussels.

I also had a preview of what to expect in a Japanese supermarket… I found tons of stuff with no idea what it was… it looked like tiny ravioli, but could have been slices of pickled tofu… or was it meat? All in asian characters, the only latin letters being the producer.

I’ll be in for a ride – or have Miso soup for a month!

So I got to taste a couple of new things… Taro: a root that we chopped and cooked, that had a flower-y, slightly gooey, sweet taste.

A Pitaya, aka dragon fruit: yummy, not too sweet, but the juice will color anything it touches… (and wait till you pee, the next day!)

And a spiky, orange Kiwano, that had some green, cucumber-like seeds inside that you scraped out with a spoon. The taste was slightly reminiscent of cucumber too, I guess it’s really great on a hot day….

The spring rolls were fun to make, we had the rice paper, seaweed paper, avocado, salad, cucumber, tomato, carrots, paprika, coriander and chili… Easy, light, but delicious. Ok, we also added a Japanese special mayo.

But all in all, a light meal!
