Late dinner

I met up with my friend Federico for beers…. but at one point, you just need some solid food. It’s nearly 11 pm, and in Germany or Belgium, a lot of places would be close to closing time…

Of course, not so here in Argentina. We walked over a few blocks into the city and went to El Cuartito – la buena pizza.

And buena it was!

Really yummy. Argentinian pizzas tend to be thicker, with a lot of dough, and lots of cheese and fat dripping everywhere.

We had a couple of slices, I love the cheese and onion the most. With that, a bottle of Stella Artois, a greeting from Leuven I though. But, turns out, it’s made here  by Quilmes, under license…

Well, makes sense. The amount of Stella that is sold every day in Buenos Aires would make the shipping of it over the ocean slightly ridiculous…. They would drink Belgium dry!

El Cuartito is a great place – at 11 pm it was packed, loud, like a sports bar, with posters from box fights, movies, a signed Diego Maradona shirt…

Founded in September 1934, it has been declared cultural heritage of Buenos Aires! It’s an institution, being one of the oldest pizza restaurants in Buenos Aires. It also specializes in empanadas, so there’s reason to come back soon!
