This weekend I finally broke the spell and went out at night. Sometimes you just gotta get the ball rolling.
Buenos Aires goes out late. Seriously. Rio and Sampa at least had some bars that you could have a drink at in the early evening. Buenos Aires dances to a different beat. Dinners are late, and clubs don’t open before midnight, and fill up at 2am or so.
Not easy for me, who, once at home, is hard to get off the couch again. Friday night, miraculously, I managed at least a bit. While the others were heading for a late dinner, I ate early and then went to have a quickly look at Flux, a bar close to the city’s major axis, 9 de Julio.
It turned out to be a nice bar, with great dance music playing. I ran into a friend by accident and had a couple of drinks with him and his buddies.
On the way home I stopped by another bar, Contramano, that is just in the next block and that I had wanted to try out for some time.
An older crowd is dancing away to cheesy Eurotrash (Germany’s Eurovision disaster Glorious is very popular here, as in Brazil!).
I got a pretty big bottle of wine (3 generous glasses) for the 50 AR$ cover charge….
When I came home I passed out on the bed, lights on, dressed and all… That’s how I found myself at 7 in the morning.
Saturday night started with another visit at Flux, Hector came over again, and so did our new Canadian friends, for a round of beers.
I then went on to a party called Fiesta Eyeliner, that is held in an old church.
Great song selection, from a Michael Jackson Special to Roxette’s 1989 hit, Dressed for success, to Gaga’s Applause, you could dance the night away in a fun, unpretentious atmosphere. Anything goes, everyone in a good mood.
The crowd was young though, somewhere in their early twenties, just 18 or even below… It was a sounding reminder that I’m going to hit 40 in 2015….
I had a good time, but at one point towards 3am (when the crowd was just getting into it) I called it a night…
I have to say I really can’t stand the cigarette smoke anymore.
Smoking is banned in Argentina, even in this church club, but no one cared… I haven’t smelled that bad in years.
Sunday meant sleeping in and a bit of relaxing at the pool, before taking off to the Feria in San Telmo for the afternoon. I would’ve stopped there, but a friend told me about that party in Buenos Aires’ famous Amerika Club.
This is a famous BA club that brings together all possible people and amorous orientations. Usually with two dance floors on Friday and Saturday, the 100 ARS$ cover gets you free drinks all night.
Now add some darker spaces to that, and you can imagine what is going on there on a weekend, till it closes after dawn…
As it was Sunday, this one started earlier, and was packed when we arrived at 9. Again, trashy Euro-pop mixed with harder beats got the mixed crowd dancing…
I got home at midnight. And I am really looking forward to my quiet, quiet uneventful Monday.
