I already had a stroll through San Telmo last Sunday with friends, when the flea market was on, but I did not have my camera with me so I decided I needed to come back.
I first ran into a festival celebrating Lebanese Independence day, with falafel stands and a music and traditional dance show. My friend explained me that Avenida de Mayo is used for a number of festivals throughout the year. It was also there that I saw the Pride March the weekend before.
On to Plaza de Mayo, and right into the next event, some kind of Argentinian historical consume march. I could not make out the sense of it, and it was over so fast I hardly could make some pictures. They had some military regiments marching on in historic consumes, followed by a number of people in their traditional Argentinian dresses…
Then finally, the San Telmo feria.
The real flea market is located on Plaza Dorrego, but on sundays all of Calle Defensa is lined with stands. I started to walk down from Plaza de Mayo, with my friend Hector, and we sampled some food and fresh orange juice and watched the street artists.
It is a pretty touristy place, the part that is in Defensa. You can buy tons of clothes, leather bags, mate tea pots, Malfalda memorabilia (I didn’t know she was Argentinian) and other art and stuff. Still, the atmosphere is nice and relaxed and the neighborhood is really beautiful.
Still the best part of the market is on Plaza Dorrego, with the real old stylish Argentinian ladies, all made up beautifully, selling off antique stuff. Unfortunately, it took me too long to get there this time, so I missed number of stands that had already packed up.
Ok, next weekend then. I love having this much time in BsAs, even though more than half of it is over and I wish I could stay much longer…
