I have rarely seen a more elaborate, beautiful building than the Palacio de Bellas Artes in Mexico City.
Construction started in 1904, but the revolution and the soft soil caused decades of delay.
It was Mexican architect Federico Mariscal who finally completed the building in 1934.
The exterior is Neoclassical and Art Nouveau, while the interior is amazing Art Deco. Even empty, the building would be a sight in its own right.
However, you find some amazing murals by Diego Rivera, David Alfaro Siqueiros, Rufino Tamayo and José Clemente Orozco, among others.
And as if that would not be enough, the Palacio hosts a theatre, and numerous exhibitions. In short, it’s the ‘Cathedral of Art’ in Mexico, as it has been called.
This year, it celebrates it’s 80th birthday, with numerous events throughout the year. My friend Jimana organized cheap tickets for tomorrow night.
