Cost of living in Mexico

From all I had heard, I knew Mexico would be one of the cheaper stops on this trip.

The cost of living is, in comparison to Europe, much cheaper, and the exchange rate adds to that, too.

Which immediately made me book a nicer place, as I felt I could afford it… and it was worth it. Francisco & Rodolfo’s place was one of the best Airbnb rentals I ever had and worth every Peso.

Here are the figures for the 29 days in Mexico City:

1110 €  accommodation
460   €  eating out & drinks
110   €  cultural activities, entry fees, etc…
80     €  supermarkets
75     €  other expenses (phone, etc…)
55     €  transport, bikes, etc…

All in all 1890 Euro for a month, and therefore under budget. Yay!

I spent a lot on eating out and drinks in comparison, and even more so if you think how cheap it was.

Transport and cultural activities were dirt cheap, too. Only the phone had a comparable, western price range for a phone chip and 3GB of data…

Although I have spent 230 Euro on other stuff like my subscription for Der Spiegel on my iPad, shoes, and some iTunes downloads…

But, as these expenses occur way too infrequently, I did not count them towards the Mexico City budget, just as I did not in previous months.

And of course the costs for flight tickets for the final months do not show up here, either. I’ll have to make one big post with a table, towards the end of the trip…
