Wim, a new friend from Seattle, told me about Jockstraps and Glitter, a charity Kickball match between the Seattle Quake Rugby Football Team and the Sisters of Perpetual Indulgence.
If you have never heard of the Sisters, it’s important to know what, even if it looks like a lot of fun in drag, it is a serious charity organization that has raised millions of dollars for various causes.
The Sisters use drag and religious symbols to fight sexual intolerance and satirize issues of gender and morality, all with a clin d’oeuil, but the cause is serious.
I learned a lot in the ensuing patio party at the Cuff Bar. The Sisters take their engagement very seriously, and every sister has to run through a process of admittance.
This makes sure she is really engaged to the cause, before she get’s to wear the attire and the white face. The head dresses have different meanings and are specific to the houses in different cities.
The Seattle Quake Rugby Team, for which my friend Wim is playing, teamed up with the Sisters for the fourth time for this charity event, collecting money for various causes.
The Club is a non-profit corporation and a gay organization that encourages rugby in a fun and empowering environment and also has a developmental program that encourages participating, regardless of you being an athletic or not.
The match was fun! Played in the Cal Park in the middle of Capitol Hill, on a hot Saturday afternoon, the two teams tried to beat each other at kick ball, a version of baseball, just that you kick around a big soft green ball.
As usual, and as with baseball, except for the very basic rules that you have to try to run around the field before the other team catches the ball, I had no idea what was going on.
Also, the two teams bended the rules a little bit, and the rugby team probably played it soft on the Sisters. After all, can you run over a screaming nun? See!
On top of it, the local Drag Queen commenting the show, auctioned off the various plays to do different things… for 10$ you could give a player a rub down with sun screen, for 25$ you could take their shirt off, for 50$ the pants came down. You could make them twerk, or run backwards.
And, at one point, a Sister had to loose her ‘face’ in the oiled up hairy chest of one of the Rugby team members… All in the name of charity of course.
It was a great afternoon for me. The sun was back in Seattle, I met new people, made some friends, and had lots of drinks at a patio.
I have arrived in Seattle.
