Midsumma burnin’

I timed my trip to Melbourne so that it would coincide with Midsumma, the city’s LGBT month full of events, shows, plays and parties. It was such fun last year, I didn’t want to miss it.

The day started overcast and somewhat cool, I nearly wore my long jeans. Thank God I didn’t, as it cleared up and got nice and warm. Not too hot though and I hadn’t applied any sunscreen…

I have a pretty good tan after the times at the beach in Cape Town, and didn’t even give it a thought.

Well, the result: I cannot touch my ears. They’re burned. As is my neck, arms and legs… pretty much any part of skin that was exposed. Closer to that hole in the ozone layer I guess… Did I need more proof?

Still, Carnival, the opening party of Midsumma down in Alexandra Gardens at the Yarra River, was great fun.

Thousands Melburnians gathering, in picnic mode and costumes…. stands of the different associations, live acts, drags, choirs, speeches…

I met up with Kieran and a bunch of his friends, and also with Michael and Sam, and we danced till the evening.

Great start into Melbourne’s pride month. I’m definitely going to see a number of plays and exhibitions.
