ArtMex

Mexico City has an overload of Museums, more than 150! Of every kind. The locals pride themselves that no other city on earth has more museums that Mexico City. And I am inclined to agree.

I have a huge list of museums to go to: Modern art, contemporary art, photography, print, water colors, mining, the revolution, caricatures, automobiles, industry. You name it, they got it!

I’ll be busy hunting down all the places that have a Frida Kahlo painting alone for the next two weeks.

Today I visited the small but fine Museo de Arte Moderno (MAM) in Parque Capultepec. It is celebrating it’s 50th anniversary with a fine overview of Mexican Modern Art. Of course, Frida Kahlo and Diego Rivera were present.

But they also staged an interesting show about Pedro Ramírez Vázquez, an architect that has shaped the city, modern Mexican architecture and design.

The MAM’s building itself is stunning, an example of Ramírez Vázquez works, just like the impressive football arena Estadio Azteca, the Mexican Parliament Buildings, the building of the Museo Nacional de Antropología or the modern Basílica de Santa María de Guadalupe.

My favorite though was the exhibition on french photographer’s Bernard Plossu’s Trips to Mexico in the 1960s and 1970s. It’s a beautiful showcase of Mexican history, society and development.
