Construction

Hong Kong is like one big construction site. Streets are being torn up and closed, houses torn down and replaced with new, ever higher apartment towers.

Hong Kong does not have much pity or sympathy with its older, historic buildings. I would estimate 80% of buildings are not much older than the 1970s…

The hammering sounds of construction sites are omni-present.

The most interesting feature though is the bamboo scaffolding you can see all over town, and especially fascinating is the speed with which it is built up by the workmen.

At dizzying heights, the men construct layer after layer of bamboo scaffolding. Without any discernible safety features.

I get sweaty palms when I see it and I don’t want to know how many fall to their death each year.
