Today I made my first steps into Mexico City’s night life.
I spent the day mostly in different cafés and restaurants in Colonia Cuauhtémoc and in Roma, and then met up with Antonio.
Antonio is a friend of Ignacio from Santiago (and also of Jimena), another example of the way one connection leads to the other.
And, as often, even though I hadn’t met him before, we really hit it off and had a good time, over coffee at my place, while a tropical thunderstorm passed over us.
In the evening, Antonio took me out to the historic center, and we went to the Marrakech Salon.
A tiny place, it spins mostly Mexican and latino hits, and the house is packed with a young crowd. They also do Drag shows at certain hours.
In front of it, another club, La Purisima, invites the same crowd, and people switch back and forth (to dance to basically the same sound – or even a partially identical playlist, as we established).
It’s fun, and the deco at La Purisima is worth seeing – especially in a thoroughly catholic country.
Virgin Mary’s and crosses galore… but not as holy as you might think.
Both clubs are packed, hot from all the grinding bodies of boys, girls and the occasional drag queen.
It will take you some time to get through, to the bar or the restroom, squeezing, hopping, dancing your way through the unchained masses. The temperatures rise, dress lightly!
Both bars are typical Mexican neighborhood bars, nothing fancy. My friends told me that the ones in Polanco will be much more upper-class, and chic.
But this is the true Mexican life, the kids who can’t afford to splash 250 Pesos on an entry alone, but still want to have a good time. And they do.
