Here are the figures for my Montréal spending.
In total, the city was way cheaper than expected, mostly due to low rental prices. An apartment in Montréal is not expensive.
I think the price for my apartment was cheaper than my first small place in Brussels, rented 12 years ago. Just to put it in a perspective. Montréal was by far the cheapest place I had on this trip – and it was a great one in a perfect area.
This is what it came down to:
730 € eating out & drinks
695 € accommodation
200 € supermarkets
130 € transport, bikes, etc…
120 € other expenses (phone, books, downloads)
40 € cultural activities, entry fees, etc…
In total I spent 1915 Euro. That is less than even the recently reduced budget per month (as I want to spend more time on the road), and considerably less than in any other city, except Istanbul, where my sister paid a big chunk of the rent. Last month in Tel Aviv came in 800 Euros more expensive. Crazy.
I also spent 50 Euro on the blog hosting and on my camera that needed a cleaning, but this is not in the Montréal budget.
For the first time, accommodation was not the most expensive post on this trip. I did eat out and spend a lot on drinks though, but not even in comparison to other cities.
Transport was a bit more expensive, I miscalculated in the start, and should have bought a monthly pass right away, instead of 10-trip passes.
As for other other expenses, they mostly covered the phone, I used a lot of data. Cultural activities come in last, as most of the festivals and events I went simply were free.
I am curious to put together some more sophisticated statistics on spending soon, a more thorough comparison of how much I spend, which cities were most expensive, cheap, etc…
